SUN IN SATURN

synopsis

Helena, 58, was forced to leave Canada in 2019 to care for her ill mother in Portugal. The pandemic made the move permanent, trapping her in a life she never chose. When her son Sol, 30, a cheerful transgender man, visits unexpectedly, Helena is overjoyed—but something feels off. The closeness they once shared is harder to access. Adriano, her eccentric 84-year-old father, adores Sol and finally sees the grandson he always wanted. Trying to adapt, Helena keeps busy, but physical symptoms land her in the hospital, where she’s diagnosed with broken heart syndrome—a real stress-induced condition. Only then does she understand: her body is grieving the daughter she feels she has lost. A story of identity, love, and letting go.

This film brings to the surface the undeniable change a trans person goes through and explores the question of whether or not a grief, due to a gender transition, has a plausible basis.
I explore this question by paralleling other transitions people go through, such as aging, loss, trauma, and the impact these shifts can have on those around them.
Sun in Saturn is a vision that is far from being categorized as just a "trans film" as it provokes deep and stimulating reflections on parenthood, grief and love.
